INSOMNIA

They say that when you have the urge to achieve beyond and out do yourself it won’t let you sleep.

Well it’s the truth! I had a 5hr training ride scheduled this morning starting at 5.30am which didn’t quite happen. Last night after an early dinner I went to bed at 9.30pm to wake up fresh, early next morning. The hours past by one by one and before I know it it with 11.45pm leaving me with just 4 and a half hours of sleep. That is the point where I knew that the ride wasn’t going to happen.

Alder is AWESOME!

Alder is AWESOME!

Hey there – I’m Alder and this is my first time writing to you. Most of you probably don’t know me so let’s start with a quick introduction:

I began riding at 12 with Chad as my coach. I finished last in my first race (it was a Cat 5 race), crashed in the second but quickly fell in love with the rush of riding my bike fast. After 15 years of racing, 8 of them as a professional, I developed a burning love to ride my bike. And while I don’t ride nearly as much anymore (my Strava weekly average hoovers around 1-2 rides a week) every time I return to the saddle, I end up with a huge grin on my face, the satisfying motion of pushing a big gear, and the thought why don’t I get out and ride more often?!

Katko's Korner: Doing Epic Sh!t

Katko's Korner: Doing Epic Sh!t

I’m one month into training, eight weeks post back surgery  and back to work for two weeks on light duty. I have successfully gotten up to walk on my treadmill before work and followed all my coaches instructions. I am NOT a morning person …..even though I am not treating patients my first full day of work I was in bed by 6:30 PM. I was so worn out!! I’m off to bed most evenings early. Between the exercise, work and healing I was very tired by the end of the day!  Sleep is a good thing! It is healing! I must listen to my body!

Katko's Korner: Holiday Stress

he stress of the Holidays!

I have been at home on Short Term Disability after my back surgery, and I have had a fairly free schedule. I went to my parents home for five days at Christmas! My Mom always stresses about the menu with so many people at home and now I am being more particular about what I will eat and trying to make better choices. I didn’t want to add to her stress but it was adding to mine  Breakfast was easy because I made my own and my parents don’t eat much for breakfast, but lunch and dinner were difficult!
