The Journey of getting back in racing shape had started off beautifully with a training block high in the mountains.
3 days after I got home the Road State Championship 2019 had been announced. I was feeling good about the road race! I thought I had more than a decent chance of winning! Only to find out nature had other plans.
The riding had been on a low. I was more lethargic than normal and found myself not being able to wake up for the morning rides on some days. I just assumed that I may have gotten too lazy after being off the bike for a while, it’s not that I didn’t want to ride, I also knew that an important event was up. I got myself together and went for a ride the very next day. The legs were feeling a bit sore and heart rate was a little higher than usual, again I assumed it would be because I missed a couple of training days.
Dinner was served early that night and the lights were out by 9.00pm to ride at 5.15am the next day. I woke up at 2.30am with a considerable body ache, a sore throat and 102F fever. All of this is happening 2 and a half days before I am scheduled to leave for the event by train and a 15hr Journey. I was bedridden for the next 3 days before I could start riding again.
I could not make it to the State Championship. I guess it is going to be a restart for me physically. Thankfully there is good enough time for the important events to start, i’m looking forward to getting back to riding and taking it one step at a time.
